This Is Why Your Job Application Is Not Getting A Positive Response!

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

If you believe that the first obstacle to landing a job interview is a recruiter’s judgement about your potential, then you are only seeing the tip of an iceberg!

IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU?

Most candidates do job-hunting for months. Every. Single. Day. Without a break. As if it’s their 9 to 5 job. Putting themselves out there in every possible way. Feeling low and hopeless. Losing their confidence bit by bit. How many times have you gone all in and felt - I am doing everything that I can, but nothing helps me get noticed? Why is this happening with me? The question is not about you falling short. Nothing is wrong with you. There is one tweak that you need to make to funnel your efforts in the right direction. But what is that?

MASTERING THE ATS!

What is an ATS? ATS is an application tracking system that enables to store your CV in recruiter’s database instead of their inbox. It collects, scans, parses; and ranks your profile against the job openings – on the basis of relevant keywords. The CVs are stored in a portal designed to display them quickly. This makes the recruiter’s reviewing process more efficient and helps them to view many CVs in one place. A whole team of recruiters can use the database with a single access making it easier for them to search a relevant profile for future openings. Earlier the recruiters would review them manually; making it a lengthy and disorganized process.

HOW IS ATS BENEFICIAL FOR ME?

ATS has changed the way one lands an interview opportunity. The selection process becomes efficient with the help of a tracking system. Your CV does not get lost in the recruiter’s inbox or cleared-out with the old emails. Simply optimise your résumé with job relevant keywords. Do not rely on tables or images as the system will only parse the text out of your résumé and it may lead to rejection due to BOT’s failure to read it. Your qualification may be too good. Your experience may be at par with the job’s specification. But if your format creates a glitch in the system, then what is the use?

I DON’T GET IT!

Imagine that you are visiting a grocery store. You want to buy yourself some milk. You go to the counter that has different options of milk from soy to almond, and dairy. You are already prepared with a choice in your head. So you simply scan through the brands and get you the perfect fit! To explain it in simple language, your CV is one of the milk brands on the recruiter’s ATS counter. It will screen through all the nutrient value mentioned on the carton and pick the most suitable one. It’s that simple!

IS THE TRACKING SYSTEM THAT COMMON?

Nearly 97% of Fortune500 companies rely on the ATS software to help streamline their recruitment procedure. With thousands of applications, it becomes super easy to reject or shortlist a CV. Additionally, it sends an auto-generated response. This means that all applicants get a response. While people end up cursing the HR team; the “Unfortunately, we've selected another candidate…” email response that you may have received against a job application was most likely sent by a BOT. ATS makes a recruiter’s life easy. This is the reason that most recruitment firms and big companies implement an Applicant Tracking System to improve their candidate experience. It was not the same when the recruiter had to send the outcomes manually. The process was typically very time-consuming.

HOW CAN I PREVENT MY CV FROM GETTING SUCKED DOWN BY THE ATS BLACK HOLE?

To put more light on how the ATS picks a CV, let me explain it in greater detail. If you think that a fancy looking CV with a beautiful formatting will fetch you an interview then you are probably wrong. ATS focuses on the core sections. Analyses and rejects the CVs with weaker verbs & too many fillers. Preciseness of the content is very important. Just because you have vast experience it does not mean that your CV will rank higher. Format counts. How many pages you use matter. To be quite honest, any CV that is more than 2 pages long is more likely to go low-ranked. Ideally, a CV should be 1-2 pages long. Most importantly the ATS picks up relevant keywords that closely match with the job posting. But remember, over-stuffing will not help. To be on a safer side, it is recommended to rely on ATS-friendly templates available online or even better get your resume evaluated and crafted by an expert. This may cost you a few bucks, but there is a high probability that it will land you an interview for your dream job! So it is more of an investment for your career.
